Point Pelee and Pelee Island

We just got back from spending a weekend in Ontario. Our first stop was Point Pelee National Park. In the park we went to the southern tip, which is the southern-most point in mainland Canada. The park was so pretty. We especially enjoyed the Marsh Boardwalk. A little rushed on time, we are going to go back later in the year to do the whole boardwalk. After spending a couple hours at Point Pelee, it was off to Pelee Island for bicycling and camping. The ride to the island was enjoyable on the large ferry. The weather was perfect and the island was everything we hoped it would be.

Everyone on the island was very friendly, and the atmosphere was so relaxed. We stopped in a wonderful little bakery and talked with the young girl who owned it. She had moved to the island simply for the peace and quiet. Although most of the bike riding is done on roads and the island has plenty of inhabitants, the cars rarely pass you by. People wave from their lake-view decks as you pass. The roads cut through beautiful vineyards and fields of corn and soy.

There are ruins on the island of the old Vin Villa Winery. We were bummed to find out that these had been fenced off and closed to the public. We peeked through the fence hoping to catch a glimpse, and to our surprise the care-taker was on the property and offered for us to come in and take a look. So we got our own private tour of the ruins! They were beautiful!!

We ended the trip with wine-tasting at the Pelee Island Winery. We tried ice wine for the first time. It is DELICIOUS - expensive, but delicious! For a quick, convenient, and inexpensive weekend getaway, we'd recomend Pelee to anyone. You should check it out!
